Great for when you have surplus crop, it can dry fruit, vegetables, herbs or meat. All responsibility for safe use will rest with the borrower (be aware that it will heat an enclosed area and should never be operated under flamable materials such as curtains or shelving). Danuta will keep track of its movements, so contact her on 4473 7392 if you wish to borrow it, or pass it on to another user, or return it. *Communal use of property such as tools and appliances* is a great way of building community resilience. With one or two people coordinating the scheme keeping the web-site up-to-date. Owners of equipment could either notify coordinator of loans/returns or directly update the web-site (with a little training & password). Maybe charge a small fee to join CommShare to cover administration costs and maybe purchase more shareable equipment. Annabel and I have chatted about your suggestion to ask the Pambula community gardens group or any others for assistance and think it would be a great idea. Would you still be happy to circulate to them? Currently we are aiming to plant from the 11-13th of March , but dates will be dependent on rainfall leading up that date - if we get some good warm and dry weather over the next week or so all should be good for those dates. We would love to have planting assistants on any of those dates but the main planting will be undertaken on Saturday the 13th. We will provide morning tea, a great lunch (mostly from home-grown produce) and afternoon tea on each day. We will start each day at 8 am and finish by 4pm. All planting assistants will have the choice of either going home with 1kg of certified organic garlic for planting in their own gardens and/or put their names down for fresh garlic in November. The following is a summary of how we grow our garlic so everyone has some idea of the farming system they would be contributing to and what might be involved: We grow approximately 1-2 tonne of garlic, shallots, onions and elephant garlic (Russia garlic). We grow all our produce without the use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides etc. Our long term soil fertility program relies on building soil organic matter through addition of mulch and compost, use of successive green manure crops, crop rotation (current plans are for a 5 -6 year rotation) and mineral and trace element application to deal with serious deficiencies (e.g calcium, boron). We also supplement our crops with foliar feeding with kelp and fish emulsion in spring. Pre-planting application of organically certified fertilisers are used if soil tests suggest plant requirements for nutrients are unlikely to be met. The area (0.5 acres) into which we will be planting in 2010 has had vetch, lupins, rye-corn, oats spring green manure crop and is currently under cow peas and millet (will be ploughed in as soon as the oil is dry enough). The garlic is intensively planted into raised beds. We heavily mulch all of our beds - this year the mulch will be millet from an adjacent 0.5 acre block. We have previously purchased most of our mulch but owing to costs, weeds and uncertainties about chemical residues we have decided from now on to only use mulch derived from our farm. A tractor is used for cultivation, bed forming and harvesting of mulch - all other activities are done by hand (ie planting, weeding, harvesting). In the medium term we are trying to develop a minimal tillage system for garlic and onion cultivation using summer active green manure crops that are mown and planted directly into. This system we hope will reduce the frequency of cultivation and hopefully lead to more rapid build up of soil organic matter and reduce soil structural decline. What is involved in planting garlic: For those new to garlic planting, each bulb is broken up into individual cloves. The cloves are planted , root end down, just below the surface into previously marked locations. It is peasant work and as it does involve crouching or hands and knees it is hard on joints. While it is repetitive I find it meditative and there is a certain pleasure in placing by hand each clove into the soil. Potential planters can contact us on 6494 2744. It is a collection of groups who, by their presence, have crafted a working array of tools such as web pages, on line database applications, events notices, news systems, public access areas, email mailing lists and more. Our core precept is that we help build social, economic and environmentally sustainable communities. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We love: SCALP - Sharing Community Assets with Local People (great name for the action) LESS - Local Equipment Sharing Scheme. As in "do more with LESS". (Great name for the scheme) Also sits nicely with LETS. LETs use LESS to have more of what we need. When you use LESS you are SCALPING. It would be good to ask people to put forward a list of the things they would like to SCALP through LESS. We also feel that there would best be a nominal rental - where maintenance is required and someone is happy to do it for lets (or nothing) then rental in Saphs (or no charge). Where equipment is expensive, more likely to be broken or wear out - then rental in $'s would perhaps make more sense. As Gary said, the pool of funds generated can be used to purchase good value second hand equipment, and also for making protective cases, modifications, parts, repairs and replacement. It would be good to also ask people to put forward ideas regarding all the things mentioned above " " " " " cheers -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... References: <4B8326EB.5070809@100percent.org.au> Message-ID: Climate change and peak oil are the drivers of the TT movement. There is strong impetus from Beyond Zero Emissions in Victoria to use the next couple of years of the 'transition decade' to establish a broad based acceptance of the concept and support for 100% Renewable campaign. Contrary to general belief the team at BZE believe it is possible to power Australia using only renewable energy although this would include some biomass burning. The sender is a member of one of the climate action groups that were represented at last years Climate Action Summit. Lets discuss supporting this at our meeting in March. I think that we could help to progress the cause without impinging on our other activities by incorporating information on our stalls and in the general outreach material. Meanwhile the sender has attached some info on the campaign. Please advertise far and wide the next Bega two day (and a bit) "Training for Transition" course. This time we are running it as a residential, where people stay overnight on site, as many people complained that (after they started the course) they found they wanted more time to chat and socialise with everybody else. The flyer is attached, a web page with the flyer and a map to get to "The Crossing" is at: http://nswcommunities.org.au/tttrain.html Thanks, John Barlow -- John Barlow straw bale owner-builder http://www.guru.com.au/farm/ Officially recognised Transition Town Trainer http://transition.org.au/ -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
