Best Wishes, Gary Hooley -------- Forwarded Message -------- From: Fraser Bayley To: Geoffrey Grigg Cc: scpa at thebegavalley.org.au Subject: [SCPA News] Food Producers Attention. Date: Tue, 2 Jun 2009 12:03:13 +1000 Gday, You may have heard or been approached by the people behind the Slow Food Celebration to be held at Moruya from 19th-21st but in particular regard to the 20th where there will be a "field day" promoting local producers and production in general. While the day is in the guise of a "slow food event" the motivation behind it comes from a desire to get up and running a local food supply network and to get more people growing sustainably from a backyard scale to acres. It is really about getting regional food production on the agenda. There is also the motivation of raising funds for the SAGE (Sustainable Agriculture and Gardening Eurobodalla) project which is a community site in Moruya that is to be developed into an educational resource to demonstrate growing techniques from a kitchen garden scale to acres. We have cleared the scrub from the site, put a few small demo beds in and have sown the rest to green manure at present. We hope to create an "average suburban block" on the site with the view of showing what can be done on that space that will leave about 2 acres to row crop. There will be demonstrations on the day of the 20th at the SAGE site about a 5 minute walk from the centre of town, and producers and food businesses will be showcased at the Riverside Park in conjunction with the weekly Moruya Markets. There's an opportunity here to demonstrate produce and to inspire potential food producers. It would be great if Bega valley producers were in attendance either as individuals or as a combined stand with sample produce from the Farmers Market down there. If anyone knows how to contact the organisers or participants of the Tilba Growers Market, please feel free to forward this message on to extend the same invitiaion. There is also the capacity at the Riverside Park to show off your livestock. There may be a good opportunity to bring up your prize chooks, rabbits, pigs, cows and promote your breed and perhaps get people interested in growing your breed. There should also be the opportunity to network with other growers and perhaps get a collective of say small scale organic beef producers. It would be great to see everything from Seed Savers to Smoked Trout, Apple growers to Worm farmers. Everyone involved in food production and supply from Batemans Bay to the Border. The event is being promoted in Canberra and there is strong local interest. Any interest at all please contact 4474 5903 or email info at eurobodallaslowfood.com.au _______________________________________________ scpa mailing list scpa at thebegavalley.org.au http://lists.thebegavalley.org.au/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/scpa -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We are going to tour the Narira Trust land, to choose a spot for our one-site community garden and also to identify the native flora existing there. It is of great significance for the area, because of its unique native grasses, old eucalyptus trees and orchids, etc. We hope we will be soon developing a community garden - in part of the Cobargo old golf course - preserving the natural vegetation and a rest stop with BBQ facilities. After the tour we will have a meeting at a private house. Rather small and we used all the money we had,$150 to pay for the sign. The good news is that to raise some much needed money we have a raffle,to be drawn at the growers market on 1 August. The tickets sold like hot cakes and after deducting the costs of the Slow cooker we have so far raised $120. The first prize is a 6.5 litre Breville slow cooker. The 2nd and 3rd prizes are $20 and $10 voucher for goods from the ttt plus table. We hope to sell many more tickets and to sell at the markets and elsewhere. Any ideas as to how to sell.
