I have put them on the web site on the "Our Agenda" page and I have also put Bill Caldicott's comtact details on the "Energy" page. Bill has offered to do energy assessments to help people get control of their energy bills in the coming carbon constrained future. I have included live links to transition sites at the bottom of this email because some people have had trouble finding them. TTTPlus 5th Meeting At the October TTTPlus meeting held at the Pink House in Tilba apologies were received from Carolyn Wells and Angela Marshall. Present were Peter Essex, Anne Wilson, Peter Doolan, Ros Barr, Prue Kelly and Jo Lewis. Agenda Items: Monday Night Film showing of ?The Power of Community? at the Narooma Kinema on 20th October at 6.30: It was agreed to contact as many lists as possible publicise this event and to try to get some information in the form of a flyer to hand out at the Narooma Life Saving Energy launch. A light supper is to be provided, Peter E & Jo to produce savouries and Anne and Ros will produce something sweet Peter D will look after the drinks. The evening starts at 6.30 and John Champagne is speaking at 7pm the film is to follow at about 7.30pm. Jo is to call the local radio on Saturday to get the event covered on the local community noticeboard. Ros?s letter: Ros presented a draft letter to send to organisation in our local area raising awareness of the group and its aims. It was agreed that we would not follow up on Transition Training as it was felt that a rather lower key less formalised approach would be more suitable in this area. Peter?s Biodiesel Community Bus Peter E reported that he had completed the course on small scale biodiesel production and that a plant of a suitable size would cost about $4000. He has recieved in principal support from the community and from politicians and councillors. The next step is to produce a feasibility study and a business plan. Part of the feasibility study will be to list people who are willing to be part of a roster of drivers for the bus and Jo offered to take responsibility for getting this list together. Peter will discuss other areas of the study with advisors in Bega. Relevant events in the area: Saturday 18th Oct - Moruya Sustainability Expo Sunday 19th October - Narooma Surf Club LifeSaving Energy Campaign Launch Next meeting will be on 20th November (the third thursday of the month as always) and the place and time are to be decided at the film night on Monday http://transition.org.au This is the main portal and in the menu bar at the top there is a button labeled - Transition Websites - this will give you a choice of transition sites including TTTriangle Plus which will take you to : http://eurobodalla.org.au/tttplus.html which is our front page. Again choosing from the buttons at the top of the page "Our Agenda" has these and all meeting minutes to date posted. Also under Our Agenda you will find links to the food page (with documant resources and contact details for local food producers) the transport page (with document resources and stuff about The Bus and about bus services.) jo lewis rainbird at skymesh.com.au -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There will be other TT groups that will need to raise money and how they set up the structures may depend on the aims and also how much local input and/or control are wanted. The Triangle newspaper is a NFP association as is BEND and numerous others and they seem to work well - perhaps we will be able to piggy back on an existing organisation. The school buses are run by the commercial coach service I think. There is no rush anyway - I just think it is prudent to think about how and when and explore the possibilities so we neither miss any useful opportunities nor get stampeded into a decision in order to meet a grant deadline. jo lewis po box 157 bermagui 2546 rainbird at skymesh.com.au On 18/10/2008, at 6:14 PM, Gary Hooley wrote: > > Interesting proposal Jo, this would mean a more formal and long- > term commitment to organisational structure > > Not sure of NSW laws, but state-based Association is normally > cheaper to set-up and run, than not-for-profit company with ASIC. > > Also, worth considering using an existing association or local > government to process grants & hold community assets. > Are any school buses owned and run by not-for-profit group? Our future. Our summit. From February January 31st to February 3rd, community climate action groups from across the continent are joining together for Australia's Climate Action Summit in Canberra, the weekend before the first day of the 2009 Federal Parliament. Australia's Climate Action Summit will have two distinct, simultaneous parts: a weekend strategy meeting on Saturday January 31st and Sunday February 1st for delegates from climate change action groups to build a unified national climate campaign, and a weekend public conference on the urgent climate crisis. On Monday February 2nd, there will be a day of dynamic training in climate campaigning skills for taking action, facilitating climate action groups, effective lobbying and more. On Tuesday February 3rd, the first day of the 2009 Federal Parliament, we will mobilise thousands of people in a high profile demonstration for real action on climate change. We are inviting submissions for workshops, skillshares and forums for the weekend public conference of Australia's Climate Action Summit. Workshops will be 90 minutes in length. We are looking for workshops on: * Campaign skills: workshops on campaign strategy, media, lobbying, community engagement and outreach on climate change issues; * Group skills: workshops on facilitation, building and maintaining a climate change group; * Action skills: workshops on how to organise a variety of community action (non violent direct action on coal infrastructure, rally, human sign, etc). * Informative and practical workshops on climate change myths (nuclear, "clean coal") and solutions (Transition Towns, solar technology, etc); * Workshops that explore social and environmental justice issues and climate change; * Workshops specifically for children; and * Success stories and discussions on projects/campaigns that have been successful, strong climate action groups, and great workplace initiatives to show, learn from and celebrate what has already been achieved! If you or your group have a workshop you would like to hold, please send a short description and your contact details to program at climatesummit.org.au by December 30th, 2008. If you haven't facilitated a workshop before and would like some support, get in touch! We can send you some resources, talk on the phone, pair you up with an experienced facilitator, or send you a variety of existing workshop plans to help you out: program at climatesummit.org.au Not all the workshops will fit on the published program, but there will also be "open space" time throughout the Summit where people can submit and create workshops without organising beforehand. For more information about Australia's Climate Action Summit, flyers and posters for your group, or to get involved, please contact info at climatesummit.org.au or call 0417 682 541. www.climatesummit.org.au jo lewis po box 157 bermagui 2546 rainbird at skymesh.com.au -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Urge governments to take account of native forest carbon in climate change policy In-Reply-To: References: <20081027211228.30F2B760194@mail.bluemaxx.com.au> Message-ID: I will personally put my name to that pertition but i can not speak for the rest of SETT. I believe the previously logged forest should be managed better. They need to be cleared of being a one species growth forest which is predominately Silver Top Ash as it is a great timber for woodchip. In my opinion forestry is running short of timber, that is needed to meet there quota. They logged several areas 30 years ago or more that they thought would be mature by now, but because of their poor recovery stragegies ie "it will grow back on it's own attitude" and bush fires that have wiped out several of forestries areas, they are struggling for useable timber. So now they decide to show their utter arrogance as an industry and decide to log not one but two areas of significance at one time. The consequences of any logging of any of our remaining sections of forest is of a great consequence to us all as living human beings. Fine let us have plantation timbers, although i feel hemp is the future product for our area. It could be run by forestry but in hindsight i think they would only fail to see it's full potential. Let the forestry workers be retrained and employed within the hemp industry. It has (hemp) so many different industry portfolios. We could produce, make and supply clothes, rope and various products for the building and automotive industries. It is a plus for our area as a potential employer in an ever changing market place. We need alternative energy sources and there is one out there right now, www.carnegiecorp.com.au. the use of wave technology that can meet global demand is huge. We do not need to create electricity from our native forests. If they want to use plantation timbers for the purpose of creating electricity let them do it. It is something that will never be profitable. When you log the way forestry do today it is a wonder that anything grows back. They have no concept of soil depletion, they DO NOT go back into the forested areas and thin out un natural regrowth nor do they feed the soil any of nutrients that they took away. If this Federal Government can show itself to be a world leader in tackling Climate Change head on, then lets hope that the first thing that is done is to ban all logging of any existing native forest. Plantation timbers not included.
