Best method is physical removal. Probably not the advice you wanted and hopefully someone has more advice. Found this on the net, hope it helps Green Vegetable Bug, Passion Vine Hopper . I'm now living in New Plymouth and I am wondering if anyone there knows any organic controls for the green vegetable bug and the passion vine leaf hopper. The vege bug loves beans, especially butter beans, although I find it on other veges. I squash all I find, but its not enough as they damage about half the crop. The leaf hopper also loves beans, but is also on everything else, ornamental or food plants. Cheers Hi Holger Green Vegetable Bug, Nezara virudula, Hemiptera Lifecycle It has two-three generations per year. Egg stage is about 20 days long and eggs are usually found on the underside of leaves. The nymph stage is about 80 days long. The young nymphs are orange with dark markings that develop to shining black nymphs. The adult stage is about 100 days and they are green, 10-13 mm in diameter. Mating takes place in spring and summer. Adults over winter in sunny positions on evergreen trees and shrubs such as citrus. What do the bugs prefer? What happens if you disturb them? They prefer sunny positions on host plants such as potatoes, tomatoes, black nightshade, tamarillos, beans, corn and passionfruit. Tomatoes and tamarillos get hard, corky growths where the bugs have pierced the fruits. When the bugs are disturbed they can exude a brownish foul-smelling fluid, which will stain fingers or clothes and leave persistent odour. Because of this, most predators avoid the bug. What do they do? What happens with the plants? Both nymphs and adults suck the plant sap so plants wilt and shrivel and get stunted. What to do to get rid of the pest! Green vegetable bug parasite: Trissolcus basalis, Hymenptora a wasp egg parasite that requires warm dry conditions, well established in the northern North Island. Vespid wasps: Common and German wasp: feed on both adult and nymph bug. Vespid wasps considered pests as well. Crop rotation to break the pests lifecycle Remove debris and weed growth to reduce over wintering sites. Row covers for the seedlings Hand-picking the bugs and squeeze them Spray with Neem oil. It acts as a deterrent and anti feeder. Biodegrades within two weeks when exposed to sunlight. Repeated application. Spray with pyrethrum. Poisonous to all insects. Repeated application necessary since it does not kill the eggs. Do it in the evening when bees and beneficial insects are not active. Less burning of plants as well. It breaks down in 48 hours. Row covers for seedlings Hand pick them Companion plants such as geranium and petunia, marjorams, coriander, chamomile, yarrow. What happens with the pest when you use Neem spray and/orPyrethrum spray? sometimes the spray will interfere with the metabolism of the insect and it will die. Neem spray acts as an anti feeding agent Pyrethrum is lethal to all insects and should be used with care! Preferably use in evenings For more information - Penny Woodward?s Pest-Repellent Plants (ISBN: 1864470283). Carole B. Subject: Article from Time Magazine on the ecology of flush toilets Toilet flushing Is It Time to Kill Off the Flush Toilet? By Don Duncan / Macau Thursday, Nov. 06, 2008 Toilet flushing To flush or not to flush. That was the question that designers and ecologists were asking each other this week as hundreds of people - who spend a lot of time thinking about these things - convened for the annual World Toilet Summit and Expo in Macau. The World Toilet Summit and Expo is like the Star Trek Convention of the waste management and sanitation world. Toilets on show run the gamut from a cardboard box complete with a hole, plastic bag and pouch of waterless magic pathogen-busting dust ($50), to a high-tech 'uber-toilet,' featuring an in-seat warmer/cooler, male and female water jets, an in-bowl light (why? why?) and a USB port so you can connect your mp3 player for your soothing tune of choice ($1,200). But figuring out how to wean the world off the flush handle took center stage. Though the common flush toilet has remained largely the same since it's invention in 1596, the world it inhabits has changed drastically. City populations have mushroomed, sewers have become overburdened and water has become scarcer. Now, the flushing loo - that human innovation that lifted the industrialized world out of its own dirt, cholera and dysentery - is quickly becoming one of the more egregious instruments of waste in this time of acutely finite resources. "The world can't sustain this toilet," says Jack Sim, the founder of the World Toilet Organization - the other WTO - an organization that advocates for sustainable sanitation solutions for all. "This 'flush and forget' attitude creates a new problem which we have to revisit." If you are, as Sim's said, one of the millions who tends to 'flush and forget' on a regular basis, chances are you're dumping up to 22 liters of drinkable water every day, one three- to six-liter flush at a time. But the problem doesn't stop there. What follows - the 'forget' part of the toilet experience - is the long and costly process of sanitizing the water that was clean before you answered nature's call. In the developed world, the flush toilet is our only direct link to the enormous - and exorbitant - engineering feat that is the modern urban sanitation system: the sewers, filtration plants, water treatment facilities, and finally, treated water disposal channels that send the scrubbed water into our rivers and lakes. Using so much water per flush unnecessarily increases the volume of our waste and the cost of its transportation and treatment, ecologists say. If you don't put waste in water in the first place, then you don't have to spend money to remove it at the back end. The process also leaves a huge carbon footprint, says Rose George, author of The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why it Matters. In the UK, she says, "the sewage system uses as much energy as what the largest coal fire station in the [country] produces" - about 28.8 million tones of carbon dioxide a year. But the fundamental shift in how we think about our waste, and by extension, dispose of it, needs to be to stop mixing liquids and solids, says the WTO's Sim. "The human body is designed to separate solids from liquid waste," and we should follow suit, he says. By separating fecal matter from urine at the source in what's called a "urine diversion toilet," a wider ecological system of waste disposal becomes possible. Solids can be composted for fertilizer and harvested for methane gas. Urine can be used to produce phosphorous and nitrogen and clean, drinkable water. (The question is, will people bring themselves to drink it?) Ecological sanitation, as this call to arms is known in toilet circles, is already up and running in many spots around the world. In rural China, 15.4 million homes convert methane into power from what normally went down the pit behind the house. Household waste is stored in a state-subsidized "digester," a kind of metal stomach that breaks down the matter and releases methane gas which is trapped for reuse. In the French city of Lille, a small fleet of ten buses are also using methane, gleaned from the city's poop. And in some Indian villages, simple latrines have been built that separate waste and use it to produce compost and fertilizer at a per capita cost infinitesimally lower than any waste management budget in the West. In a reversal of the traditional one-way innovation highway - from the West to the rest of the world - many of the best ideas in sanitation are coming from the developing world. And for now, the gap between these initiatives and the large-scale urban sanitary solutions of tomorrow is being filled by inventors and dreamers like Jack Sim and others who gathered this week in Macau. Among their larger visions for collective waste disposal and treatment on display was a network of low-water toilets that separated solids from liquids and assigned them to reservoirs shared by an apartment building or block of houses. Those resevoirs would then produce fertilizer, soil conditioner and energy producing methane - and dramatically cut the cost to the public of waste disposal. But for many people, this is just hot air. "We have the luxury of flushing the toilet and just seeing it disappear," says George. The industry is stalled not only by that convenience, but by taboo. "People are uncomfortable talking about their own waste." It may have been quite some time since relating the adventures of your most recent bowel movement has constituted acceptable fodder for conversation, but nevertheless, says George, our 'bodily products' have to come back into the conversation somehow, if we are ever going to flush away the flush. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No virus found in this incoming message. This would possibly bring a change to the positioning of the houses on the blocks as a lot of city folk would not be able to handle the walk outside to the loo. By having the composting toilets grouped as four seperate toilets it would reduce the cost of infrastructure when connecting the whole subdivision. To harness the methane in this way i feel is one of the many ways we as humans can change our bad habits. I will be submitting this idea, along with others, when we our finalising our EDAP at SETT. It is a plan that would simultaneously move us toward solutions to the climate crisis and the economic crisis ? and create millions of new jobs that cannot be outsourced. First, the new president and the new Congress should offer large- scale investment in incentives for the construction of concentrated solar thermal plants in the Southwestern deserts, wind farms in the corridor stretching from Texas to the Dakotas and advanced plants in geothermal hot spots that could produce large amounts of electricity. Second, we should begin the planning and construction of a unified national smart grid for the transport of renewable electricity from the rural places where it is mostly generated to the cities where it is mostly used. New high-voltage, low-loss underground lines can be designed with ?smart? features that provide consumers with sophisticated information and easy-to-use tools for conserving electricity, eliminating inefficiency and reducing their energy bills. The cost of this modern grid ? $400 billion over 10 years ? pales in comparison with the annual loss to American business of $120 billion due to the cascading failures that are endemic to our current balkanized and antiquated electricity lines. Third, we should help America?s automobile industry (not only the Big Three but the innovative new startup companies as well) to convert quickly to plug-in hybrids that can run on the renewable electricity that will be available as the rest of this plan matures. In combination with the unified grid, a nationwide fleet of plug-in hybrids would also help to solve the problem of electricity storage. Think about it: with this sort of grid, cars could be charged during off-peak energy-use hours; during peak hours, when fewer cars are on the road, they could contribute their electricity back into the national grid. Fourth, we should embark on a nationwide effort to retrofit buildings with better insulation and energy-efficient windows and lighting. Approximately 40 percent of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States come from buildings ? and stopping that pollution saves money for homeowners and businesses. This initiative should be coupled with the proposal in Congress to help Americans who are burdened by mortgages that exceed the value of their homes. Fifth, the United States should lead the way by putting a price on carbon here at home, and by leading the world?s efforts to replace the Kyoto treaty next year in Copenhagen with a more effective treaty that caps global carbon dioxide emissions and encourages nations to invest together in efficient ways to reduce global warming pollution quickly, including by sharply reducing deforestation. jo lewis rainbird at skymesh.com.au -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The TT presentation night on wednesday at Bermagui went quite well a reasonable turnout with some new faces. There was lively debate provided and an empassioned call by Annette Turner from The Crossing for the use of the Crossing to help with the cause. I was the only representative from TTT+ at the presentation and felt so called to announce the decision to start markets at Tilba. There was good support for the idea from the crowd. Carole Broadhead, President SCPA, and I also caught up and she was very supportive for the idea and asked me to email her with the details which I did the next morning. The email was as follow: As requested here is the information regarding the Transition Town plus innovation of a Farmers Market at Central Tilba. We have coined the phrase 'Make it , Bake it, Sew it, Grow it' to capture the essence of the market. We have booked the small hall at Central Tilba commencing Saturday 6 December thru to end April from 8am to 1pm. The only saturday not bookable was 7 March and we will need to see closer to the time what we will do in that instance. There will be a charge of $10/table, shared tables are also ok. To book a table please contact Annie Eldridge on 4473 7338. We'd love to see as many of your members as possible. Carole had emailed this to her members by the friday morning so the news has spread well already. Carole invited me to the Loomgrowers morning tea on the friday and it was a great morning. There was great support for the markets by others present, some of whom are SCPA members. Carole has suggested that TTT+ become a member of SCPA, see the details in the latest Sustain magazine Pages 34 and 36. I think this is a good idea for the following reasons: -Builds a supportive relationship with SCPA -Provides insurance for the markets -Carole suggested that we could have a TTT+ table at the markets which could capture the odd small producer that doesn't have insurance and they would then be covered by our membership. -for all the reasons on P36 -we can use some of our fundraising money to pay for this Carole had mentioned that going back to the 2.30 meeting time for our monthly meeting would suit her better and I think this will mean that we may see more of her at the meetings which would be good. I also announced our meeting details at the Bermie meeting as well. If you agree that we should join SCPA let me know and I will arrange it. Who was going to ask the wineries if they wanted to come to markets? I have spoken with Annie Eldridge today and she is going to check on the halls insurance cover just so we know. Hope you are happy with this. Ros Barr 4473 7929 _________________________________________________________________ Take a summer road trip with Windows Live Hotmail. Also, to promote the idea of using local bio-diesel to ensure more efficient transport (cost effective), which can be applied generally to local transport. Reducing fuel costs is important in helping local farmers and other producers get their produce to consumers/markets/retail-outlets. For example a community owned truck with local bio-diesel to assist the development of a local food chain would be worth pursuing. Another issue is in honey production where the bee-keepers travel large distances to collect honey, then need to distribute it to widely spread retail-outlets. If only the bees produced the fuel, as well as the honey, for "free". Best Regards, Gary H.
